Our goal at Bumblebee Acres Farm is to spread love through fiber art and cute, fluffy animals.

We believe that every artist should work with the highest quality materials, whether that be carefully curated yarn blends that we hand dye in vibrant, inspiring colors, Cormo wool shorn ourselves from our own flock of sheep, using scissors to ensure the best cut, ultra soft and luscious angora tenderly clipped from each bunny.  What's more, we treat our fluffy fiber friends as members of our own family, so you can be sure that those cormo rolags or clouds of angora you're spinning came from the happiest sheep and bunnies. This philosophy extends to the yarn and fiber we hand dye- only sourcing our yarn and fiber from reputable companies and farms that use humane practices.

Beautiful yarn and fiber you can feel good about!

We only dye colors we WANT to work with.

On yarn bases we LOVE to work with.

Yarn.

Fiber.

Every item is made from the heart.

And they can only be found here, in our corner of the worldwide web, or when you visit us at one of our EVENTS.

Our story…

Our story begins in rural Latvia in the early 1900s, where a little girl with big, blue eyes- Marta -grew up on a sheep farm.  Marta, a fiesty girl, watched over the flock, collected eggs, spun yarn, and dreamed of life in the city. When she was old enough, she ran away to Riga and became a seamstress, because sewing and designing were her true passions. She married and had two daughters, Ina and Ilze.

During WWII, while Latvia was being overrun by Russia and Germany, Marta and her small family escaped on a long journey to America. In New York City, Marta's story is parallel to many immigrants who escaped war-torn Europe, but she never stopped sewing.  She passed her passion for creating and her skills of crochet, knitting, and sewing to her daughter, Ilze. Years later, Ilze started her own family, and moved from NYC to upstate New York, to Texas, and finally settled in Northern Illinois. Marta and Ilze were always close, and she followed her youngest daughter to be a part of her four grandchildren's childhoods.

Carissa, the youngest, grew up hearing stories of Latvia from her grandmother. She fell in love with tales of shepherding, and how a young Marta was always knocked down by a particularly unpersonable ram, and how one day she pricked him in the behind with her sewing needle -legend has it, the ram never bullied her again! There were stories of geese and chickens, and photographs of the Latvian countryside and traditional weavings, and Carissa was enchanted.

Art and creativity passed from Marta to Ilze, and was inherited by Carissa. In the 1980's, when Carissa was 12 years old, the trio began crafting together for fun- sewing handmade teddy bears from beautiful fabrics and dressed in miniature outfits, painted clothing, crochet and knit ornaments, and more. On weekends they would sell their handmade treasures at local craft fairs.  In 1995, Marta passed on, but her legacy of art and farming lived on in the hearts of Ilze and Carissa, and even Carissa's own children.

And finally, in 1998, Bumblebee Acres was created- named for the beloved nickname "Bumblebee" Marta had called Carissa as a toddler. The business began with raising AKC Shetland Sheepdogs and Dollface Himalayan and Persian Cats. It was only natural that the animal loving duo, Ilze and Carissa, would dream up a small hobby farm, soon adding English Angora rabbits, two llamas, chickens, and even a trio of ducks to their small menagerie. Samantha and Sarah, Carissa's eldest daughters, grew up surrounded by and loving on these fuzzy animals, involved in 4H, creating in the craft studio, and showing their beloved bunnies and dogs on the weekends in ARBA and AKC shows.

Ilze, Carissa, and Carissa's own four children moved in 2003 to a bigger farm where they gradually acquired Havanese dogs, Angora goats, a few more llamas, two alpacas, pygora goats, a whole rabbitry of beautiful English Angora bunnies, and, finally, the beloved Cormo and Shetland Sheep. In the beginning the farm focused soully on producing naturally grown vegetables vended at the Woodstock, IL Farmer's Market.  However, the love of crafting and animals slowly began to take over, with Ilze, Carissa, Samantha, and Sarah all creating items from their own fiber farm, ranging from handspun yarns to handmade accessories.  In 2014, Ilze joined Marta in heaven.

Now, Carissa runs Bumblebee Acres Fiber Farm with the help of her four children- three grown daughters Samantha, Sarah, and Hailianna, and son, Joey. We now live in Northern Illinois, at our very own farm. Together, we lovingly raise Cormo, Shetland, and Cormo x Shetland sheep, English and Satin Angora bunnies, Pygora goats, and LlamaxAlpaca for their fiber. We create art from our woolly family members' fleece and responsibly sourced wool- hand spinning yarn, hand dying, and designing knit and crochet patterns.

Our passion is creating artistically hand-dyed yarns, inspired by life, nature, and our favorite books, films & tv shows!

Meet the Bees!

QueenBee (Carissa)

Hi there! I’m QueenBee! My interest in wool began when I was very young, I remember in kindergarten watching a video of Navajo weaving and thinking I want to do that! I was in love with the idea of making beautiful scenes with colorful wool. Combine that with stories of sheep farming from my beloved Mema (my grandmother) and seeing all her traditional Latvian weavings from her youth growing up in Latvia, and I felt such a connection to it as if it were woven into my genes.

Through my wool journey I’ve learned to raise and care for my own fiber animals that produce beautiful wool and how to shear, pick, scour, card, spin and dye it as well as weave, felt, knit and crochet it. I’ve learned to do it all and I love most of everything to do with wool but my true passions are the animals, dyeing yarn and spinning wool.

I’m incredibly blessed to be able to share all of this with my four children whom add so much creative zest to our farm and wool business.

Most days you’ll find me hanging out over steaming dye pots concocting some new delicious colorways or out in the gardens and pastures with the flowers and wool babies.

I’m so happy you’re here!

SamBee (Sam)

I’m SamBee! I grew up loving animals and art, and was lucky enough to have a mom who encouraged all my passions growing up! In 2015 I graduated from Williams College, in the beautiful Massachusetts Berkshire Mountains, with a full-ride scholarship. I double majored in Psychology and English Literature, and even after all that, my dream was always been to return to Bumblebee Acres and build our fiber business and farm. I am a self-taught knitter and crocheter, and I design my own patterns with our yarn- you can find them here on our website, and also on Ravelry! Besides designing, I help process the yarn, I handle emails and social media, product photography, have a fiber artist podcast “Caught in the Wool” on Youtube, and run our Patreon!

SenBee (Sarah)

I’m SenBee and I am the co- yarn dyer with QueenBee! Dying yarn takes up a lot of my time, but when I’m not in the studio, I love to explore the outdoors with my dogs Reuben and Jinx! I have always loved animals more than anything and it’s my favorite part of living on the farm- I get to see my furry kids every day. Books are my favorite way to spend my free time, and I am always looking for a new book to read. I have always been artistic (a common theme in our family), and one of my first passions was photography, I love photographing the macabre and flowers…yes, that’s quite the combo, but I like to think I make it work. I am half of the sheep, goat, and bunny shearing team with Baby! I occasionally design my own knit patterns that can be found here on our website and on Ravelry.

BabyBee (Hailianna)

I’m BabyBee and I love every endeavor I put my mind to! My truest passion is Yoga, and I am about to finish getting my Yoga Teacher License! Besides doing yoga, journaling, and reading, I am the head yarn processor! My days involve twisting, tagging, and labeling yarn! I am also the bunny caretaker, so every day I check on, feed, water, and play with the Angora bunnies! You’ll also see me modeling some of Sen and Sam’s patterns! I am half of the sheep, goat, and bunny shearing team with Sen! In my free time I love to knit gifts for QueenBee, bake, go to the beach (hard to do in Illinois, but I try!) goof around with the other Bees, and sometimes play a mobile game or two with BroBee!

BroBee (Joey)

BroBee handles everything farm related- he is the head shepherd! He manages the sheep, goats, and llamas. He does the daily feeding, watering, occasional wrangling, stall cleaning and animal caretaking. He is the youngest, but tallest, of the Bees and the only boy-bee! He knows how to knit, crochet, needle felt and spin yarn, and is the goofiest of the Bees! Like most teens, he loves to game and watch Youtube in his free time. He loves cars and his goal is to fix one up himself. His favorite things are Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures, Roblox, pizza, sushi, and his sheep!
